Why Some Conservatives Oppose Gay Marriage

Why Some Conservatives Oppose Gay Marriage While some conservatives oppose gay marriage, others do not. For conservatives who do oppose it, the issue has less to do with homophobia and more to do with protecting the Judeo-Christian view of marriage. Social Conservatives and Wedge Issues While it is true that social conservatives have been on the front lines of wedge issues, not all conservatives are as deeply passionate about them as others. In fact, a large portion of the conservative movement- fiscal conservatives and crunchy conservatives, for example- may find themselves disagreeing with social conservatives on issues like gay marriage. Nevertheless, simply identifying as a conservative is enough to earn the vitriol and condemnation of the LGBT movement. Opposition to Gay Marriage vs. Homophobia Most gay rights advocates voice opinions of their own. Conservatives are motivated by homophobia [or hate], they say. Conservatives use their religion as a way to oppose gay marriage, others opine. Still, others believe that conservatives dont harbor the same hatred for divorced people, vandals, or other sinners. They have a special hatred for gays and lesbians. Comments like these force even those who have no particular sentiment either way to take up sides and defend their loosely-held convictions (whether they lean to the right or the left on this issue). I dont support gay marriage is not the same as I hate gays, and those on the left are frequently too blinded by their advocacy to recognize it. Those that do simply refuse to acknowledge it. Not everyone who opposes gay marriage is a homophobe, and not everyone who opposes gay marriage hates people who are gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender. By branding the religious end of an entire conservative movement as hateful, the people making such remarks come off as hateful of conservatives. It boils the issue down to one or the other, without considering those in between. Marriage As a Sacred Symbol For many people (not just religious conservatives), marriage is a sacred symbol of heterosexual love and commitment. Seeing it changed in such a profound way would be like the National Rifle Association suddenly claiming the rainbow flag as its symbol. Just as this would change the meaning of the flag in a way that is unpleasant to the LGBT community, so too would gay marriage change the meaning of marriage to a large part of the married community. Separation of Church and State? There is a common misconception among those on the left that the Constitution mandates a clear separation of church and state, yet that language is nowhere to be found in the document. The phrase was taken from a letter by Thomas Jefferson and bound into law by an activist Supreme Court in 1878. The Constitution deals with the issue of religion via the Establishment Clause and the Free Exercise Clause. In the former case, Congress cannot pass laws based on religious principles and in the latter, the government cannot keep people from practicing their religion. National recognition of gay marriage is believed by many conservatives to be an example of government interfering with their right to practice their religion. They see it as akin to the government changing a basic tenet of their religion, not unlike forcing Orthodox Jews to eat pork or forcing Catholics to use something other than water in their baptisms. It reduces the covenant of marriage to a bureaucratic rubber stamp and also bastardizes the holiness of it. Recognition of Civil Unions vs. Marriage As it relates to the federal government, the trouble begins with how marriage is treated. There are very few mainstream or common-sense conservatives who will argue that a gay persons life-partner shouldnt be afforded the same rights as a married persons spouse, especially in instances where one of the parties is ill. The trouble with existing federal law is that it recognizes the institution of marriage, which is a holy, religious practice. While atheists will argue marriage is a legal covenant, most conservatives (and even many liberals) will concede that it is an act of religion. Most mainstream conservatives believe that civil unions would be a better way for the federal government to bestow benefits on couples. State vs. Federal While there are many conservatives who believe the institution of marriage should be defended as a covenant between a man and a woman, many more believe that the federal government shouldnt be dealing with the subject at all. Its a matter of jurisdiction. A large majority of conservatives believe the gay marriage issue is a states rights issue since there is no explicit language regarding the subject in the Constitution. According to the Tenth Amendment (Article X of the Bill of Rights), The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people. If it were a matter of the states, there undoubtedly would be states in the U.S. that would permit gay marriage and others that wouldnt. For the majority of conservatives, this is fine as long as the voters of these states are the ones making the decisions (not the lawmakers). The Bottom Line For most mainstream conservatives, gay marriage isnt the issue it is for social conservatives. While there is a crossover for many on the right, political conservatism is less about wedge issues and more about limiting the size and scope of government, building a strong national defense and enabling the freedom of enterprise. Many conservatives who took a states right stance have put the issue on the back-burner since the Supreme Court decisions legalizing gay marriage and prohibiting state restrictions and bans.

Through the taxes, governments can raise money for servicing national debts, fund development projects as well as supply of important services to the country’s citizenry. Such strategies include commitment to provide adequate security in the country to facilitate the operations of the companies. The American Education System Essay -- Education Reform

To understand how to solve a problem, we must first understand what we are trying to fix. For example, can a carpenter without any medical experience repair a heart valve? Of course not, he or she must first obtain the proper education necessary to perform such a complex operation. The same can be said about the American education system. Throughout America’s history parents, educators, and government officials have been debating what changes must be implemented for American children to receive every opportunity possible to gain an education that will prepare them for the future. However, these cries for reform are so demanding that many times the reforms created to please the people are pushed through so fast that consequences are never completely considered. These latest cries for reform came after the annual report by Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) was released in December 2010 stating that 15-year-old American students ranked average in mathematics, reading, writing, and science (Duncan, 2010). â€Å"Average† might not be much of an alarm to many; however, when companies, such as Microsoft, have to hire software engineers from other countries to fill positions because American’s are unqualified, it brings everything to another level (Guggenheim & Chilcott, 2010). The use of standardized, multi-choice, fill in the bubble tests to hold schools accountable for what is taught within their walls has become detrimental to the education system. Standardized testing is designed for a system of equality for which the school system is not. Teachers and schools cannot be held to the same accountability as other schools when there exists no equality in them in regards to budgets, resources, qualifications of teachers, ... ...earning, to be educated by those of a greater understanding. If children are to have the ability to contribute to society, and be able to succeed in life, a proper education must be made available to them. Not an education of learning how to take tests, but one of knowledge - an education given to them that teaches them how to apply mathematics in their lives, to use the sciences to understand the world around them, and to be able to read and be enlightened by its message. The public school is a place that students should want to go, hunger to go. It should not be a place of stress or fear due to an upcoming test. It needs to be a place where all have the freedom and opportunity to learn. Standardized tests had their moment in time; now the focus needs to be turned to a more in-depth education of understanding how to apply their knowledge to their everyday lives.

Organized Crime in the Windy City Essay

Known for its long period of criminal activity and rise to becoming one of the strongest crime entities, the Chicago Outfits are one of the most notorious and infamous organized groups that had ever hit Chicago. From the time it rose from Mike McDonald to the fall of Al Capone’s Chicago, this group has successfully continued to grow and rein the streets of Chicago. The structure of this group and criminal activities have made a dent if America’s society. According to Michael Maltz, â€Å"An organized crime is a crime in which there is more than one offender, and the offenders are and intend to remain associated with one another for the purpose of committing crimes. † (Abadinsky 2) and according to Donald Cressey it is â€Å"any crime committed by a person occupying, in an established division of labor†¦.. includes at least one position for a corrupter, one position for a corruptee, and one position for an enforcer. † (Abadinsky 2) and even the Federal organized Crime Control Act of 1970 attempts to define what is organized crime is. They broke it down into eight attributes that include and not limited to the following: no political goals, hierarchical, limited/exclusive membership, unique subculture, perpetuates itself, use of violence, monopolistic and governed by explicit rules and regulations. However the term is defined, all three prove that it is a group of more than one individual working together to commit a series of crime that is done in a matter that is planned out. The structure on organized crime in Chicago is based on the group called the ‘Chicago Outfits’ which are made up of ‘made’ members. According to Lindberg, â€Å"the term ‘made’ comes from La Cosa Nostra terminology and requires a blood ritual. This included Italian bloodlines, sponsorship and support of high-ranking members in a complicated process. † (Lindberg) And through this blood ritual, ‘made’ guys who are sponsored by current captains of La Cosa Nostra bring in the one being sponsored. The blood ritual that they mentioned is exactly what it means, a ritual that requires blood. â€Å"They prick your trigger finger and make it bleed, and then they put a little piece of paper; they set it on fire and you burn it in your hand, and you repeat after them that you will never betray La Cos Nostra, or you will burn like the paper is burning in your hand. Your life does not belong to you anymore; your life belongs to them. † (Abadinsky 86) Membership into the crime group is exclusive only to family members of the father’s side that can range from immediate members to distant members, but as long as they have blood ties to the boss, this secures the possibility of undercover agents infiltrating the family crime group. The ‘made’ guys hold senior advisory status while everyone else is a worker. Unlike the organized crime groups in New York, Chicago crime groups are more cooperative with other groups that are usually dominated by Italians. The structure of Chicago’s crime groups is based off of the Patron-Client network which â€Å"consists of a collection of connected points or junctures†. Bibliography Abadinsky, Howard. Some Advice about Advise

Some Advice about Advise Some Advice about â€Å"Advise† Some Advice about â€Å"Advise† By Maeve Maddox Two comments on writing sites jumped out at me recently: Whereas other kinds of writing you could slide a bit, although that is not adviced or recommended. and Very smart advise. Also always check with the publisher for submission guidelines as they all can be a little diferent but they all want perfection to their rules. I know that it’s easy to write comments in a hurry and then see, too late, that you’ve misspelled something or written an ungrammatical sentence and can’t go back to correct it. I have a lot of experience in doing just that. However, it’s not just in rapidly-written comments that advice and advise are mixed up. ESL speakers and writers must find the words easy to confuse. This from the Norway Post: Swine Flu: Mass vaccination adviced As expected the Norwegian Health authorities on Friday announced that they advice all Norwegians to be vaccinated against the swine flu Many bloggers and forum commentators, possibly native English speakers, suffer from the same confusion: nature Viewer discretion advicedegh (headline over unpleasant photo) Why heart patients are adviced for morning work (headline on medical advice site) Post Tooth Extraction Care as adviced to my patients (headline on the blog of a dental surgeon) Why are people adviced to eat seasonal fruits and vegetables? (Answers.com wiki question) We Adviced a New Mum How to Cope With a New Baby and the New Role of Motherhood (Articlesbase headline) Advice and advise are pronounced differently. The c in advice has the sound /s/. The s in advise has the sound /z/. Both words have numerous meanings, but the usual ones are: Advice: a noun meaning â€Å"opinion given or offered as to action.† Advise: a verb meaning â€Å"to counsel, caution, or warn.† The past tense form of the verb advise is advised. Tip for keeping them straight: The word advice never changes its form. You can talk about â€Å"different pieces of advice† but never â€Å"advices.† If you catch yourself trying to add any kind of ending to advice, you’re about to commit an error. Examples of use: Take my advice and stay home when it snows. I am advising you for your own good. He advised her to stay home. She failed to heed his advice. What I Learned From My Own Advice When My Kids Went Off To College

What I Learned From My Own Advice When My Kids Went Off To College SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips I’m a dad. I give advice. It’s what I do. You can’t fight nature. When it’s time to go, you go. When it’s time to advice, you advice. So, it’s natural, really the divine order of things, that when my kids went off to college, I gave them advice. I was just doing my job. I told them just two things. 1. Don’t sweat the major. Yes, if you want to build bridges, it’s best that you major in Structural Engineering. For all of us. Most of the time, it’s just not that critical. Jobs change. Workplace needs evolve. New jobs are created. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, most people go through 7 major career changes. Not different jobs - different careers. A teacher becomes an insurance salesman. A VP of marketing transitions to a non profit controller. Whitman was right. We contain multitudes. Study this: something you love. Learn about something that interests you. If you don’t know what you love, study until you do. Then, explore some more. Unless you’re a Kardashian, you don’t pick a spouse based on net worth. You don’t pick a major based on ROI. It’s short sighted. Does a major inspire you? Are you curious? Do you want to learn? If the answer is yes, that’s a good start. Graduating from college is not the end of education. You’re just getting warmed up. 2. Go out for the school play. Do something that makes you uncomfortable. Act. Sing. Debate. Play Rugby. Comfort is the enemy. Just do something new. Learn the fundamentals. Struggle. Adjust. Practice your craft. Help others. Repeat. It’s what you will do for the rest of your life. Start now. I can’t say this enough. Put yourself out there. Surprisingly, my kids took my advice. Who knew they were listening? My daughter is a dance and english major. She taps. She writes comedy. She is a Funk Dj for the college radio station. Tap shows are not selling out stadiums. They don’t sell out the Moose Lodge. There was only one Nora Ephron. Tina Fey is a limited job market. So is Mindy Kaling. I'm guessingthe Funk DJ job market is limited. I don’t care. You go girl. Play that funky music white girl. Play that music funky music right. Play that music till you die. My son wants to open a restaurant. He’s a Marketing major. He cooks. Most restaurants fail in the first year. You go boy. Cook that funky food right. Do what you love till you die. After I dumped the last Ikea instructions, after both kids were gone, it hit me. I wasn’t listening to my own advice. I wasn’t living you go dad. I wasn’t playing that funky music. The record player wasn’t even plugged in. It was buried in the garage, next to the guitar. I wasn’t growing. If anything, I was shrinking. Do something to pay the bills. Get by. I was a routine. It was time to learn from my kids. It was time to listen to my own advice. I was asked to be in my daughter’s ballet recital. â€Å"Dad, can you be Dr. Coppelia. It will be so much fun.† â€Å"What’s Coppelia? I’m in.† I did say no to the tights and the tutu. Step 1 on the road of putting myself out there. I became a high school basketball referee. Then volleyball. Football. Lacrosse. Except for the tights and tutu, I kept saying yes. Grow. Stretch. Be uncomfortable. This is the thing. Our kids grow up. Going off to college is an adventure. It’s time for them to put themselves out there. Try something new. Get uncomfortable. Stretch. Grow. As parents of these students, it’s our time too. We just need a reminder. It’s time to put ourselves out there. Try something new. Do something that makes you uncomfortable. Grow. Stretch. You go dad. You go mom. Play that funky music. Play it loud. After all, we’re just getting warmed up.

Personality in Human Beings Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Personality in Human Beings - Essay Example In this essay I shall shortly describe my own views on personality and then discuss some theories that are popular in their descriptions of the human personality. The theories of three theorists namely, Sigmund Freud (1856 - 1939), Carl Gustav Jung (1875 - 1961), Albert Bandura (1925- ), and their work on human personality shall be discussed here. In the process I shall envisage to understand the differences and similarities in the theories of psychoanalysis. In my perspective human personality is complex, and is constituted of many factors such as 1) physical attributes and genetic make-up, 2) cultural and ethnical background, 3) personal aptitudes and beliefs. The first two factors are largely inherited with little scope for alteration; like for example, skin color, height, propensity towards some inherited diseases, are inherited and do have a bearing on one's personality. The second two factors are socially constructed, partially inherited and partially changeable, but, nevertheless have great influence on the human personality. For example, the work-culture and perception of opportunities by a Chinese is more likely to be typically inherited from his/her parents and very specific to that ethnic and cultural background. I call it partially changeable because, the same Chinese immigrated to the U.S. ... The third set of factor is important and is mostly responsible for making a qualitative difference in one's personality. For example, physicist Stephen Hawking suffered from the degenerative Lou Gherig's Disease (www.hawking.org), but never allowed it to come in the way of his scientific quest. Battling with pneumonia, he lost his voice; but his sheer love for science and integrity made him to overcome all his set-backs. He is a good example of the power of personal beliefs and aptitudes, and what it can achieve, despite handicaps. Theories of Psychoanalysis Consciously or unconsciously, my concept of personality is derived from three theorists: Freud, Jung and Bandura. Importantly, the 'structure of personality' (Ewen 6) as per each construct shall be delineated here, with a further discussion of how they have helped in my understanding of the human personality. 'Construct' refers to "a set of terms and principles constructed or applied by the theorist" that constitutes a theory and they are useful in explaining the particular theory of personality and comparisons between them (Ewen 4); like for example Jung's theory of psyche and the human personality is marked by the terms and descriptions like the 'collective unconscious' and archetypes (Ewen 6). First in the discussion shall be Sigmund Freud. Von Schubert, Carus, and Schopenhauer, had already done some research in the field of 'unconscious' (Ewen 7-8). Freud's concept consists of the constructs - id, ego, and superego (Freud 1923 p.8). He holds that the human being is driven by powerful instincts which get activated when the body is mature. Human beings are born with an Id which may be understood as basic instincts like hunger, sleep and so on.
