Ryan Henry Carol Bove ENGLIT 0625 26 October 2015 Maupassant’s Gender Role Phenomenon Guy De Maupassant, a French writer in the late 1800’s, is considered one of the pioneers of the short story genre. One of the most important themes in Guy De Maupassant’s short stories is how he captures the roles of men and women in late nineteenth century France, and how he incorporates his own personal twist to each gender’s identity. In this essay, I plan to take a look at the gender roles in the film â€Å"Le Plaisir† and how it relates to Maupassant’s personal life. In order to fully understand how Maupassant presents his gender roles, one must first familiarize with his early life and childhood. Maupassant was born in Dieppe, France in 1850. His parents separated when he was only 11, and he moved to Normandy with his mother. He never saw much of his father, who left when the marriage failed. His father was known to frequent brothels and whore houses for comfort. He and his mother were extremely close , and they adored each other. However, this relationship was very unhealthy. She let him do whatever he wanted, at a young age he enjoyed boating and fishing, so he would often took his boat out by himself without any supervision. On top of that, his rejected mother would often share her negative views on men with her young son. In Geoffrey Chaucer s The Canterbury Tales, Chaucer uses the climax of The Wife of Bath s Prologue to illustrate how through the influence of the church, the figure of the wife, was seen either as week or evil. Chaucer makes this point by using religious terms and imagery, like sister and smite, and the symbol of the lion. After establishing this point, he then shows how damaging this idea can be, by showing how hollow and disturbing the relationship between the wife and her husband becomes, when the husband is in the submissive role, through the use of homonyms and objective language. The Book of Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Bible, or the last book of the Pentateuch. Deuteronomy literally means Second Law. This title conveys its nature and purpose. In other words, this book is a repetition of the law that was given to Moses and his people on Mount Sinai. It is also a completion and explanation of that law. Besides that, this book also continues on from previous events that happened in the first four books of the Bible. It helps to bring to focus and interpret the messages that are in the first four books. In Greek, Deuteronomy means a copy of this law in a book. In Hebrew, its name comes from the phrase, these are the words. The Book of Deuteronomy was written centuries after the Israelites had lived on the Land of Promise. Moses is believed to be the author. If he is the author, it was written around thirteenth century B.C. Joshua was most likely (although it is not certain) the author who concluded the book with the event of Moses's death. Moses relates all events that happen in this book with a spiritual lesson. He takes the laws that the Lord gave His people nearly forty years before the time that the writings of this book took place and adapts it to the people and events of that time. A main characteristic that sets the book of Deuteronomy apart from the other books of the Bible is its vigorous oratorical style. (The Holy Bible 147) In other words, it is a style which involves much thought coming from the author. The events in this book took place within no more than forty days. The events occurred mainly in only three places. They were in the plains of Moab, between the end of the wandering of the desert (which lasted forty years), and the crossing of the Jordan River. (Deuteronomy) The purpose of the book of Deuteronomy is to show the change in leadership from Moses to Joshua. It was also written to be a witness of God's relationship with the people of Israel. Deuteronomy begins towards the end of Israel's time of wandering through the desert. Moses gives them instructions concerning many different aspects of the life in the land they are about to enter. The first four chapters recall the time when the people came out of Egypt and died in the wilderness because of their numerous sins. It then shows how God faithfully brought the next generation to the border of Canaan, which was the promised land. The next twenty-four chapters recall the Law of God. In it, Moses repeats the Ten Commandments that had been given to him by God at Mount Sinai. Moses emphasized that God chose the people of Israel to be His people because he loved them, and they in return should love God with all of their heart and soul. Moses also shows the importance of worshiping God. From this section is where the name of Deuteronomy originated. The last six chapters prepare the people for the entry into Canaan. Joshua becomes the new leader of the people of Israel because it was near Moses's time of death. Moses teaches the Israelites a song to remind them of God's faithfulness in the people and how they should never be unfaithful to God. Moses then looks into the promised land from Mount Nebo, since he was never able to enter because of his unfaithfulness to God when he tapped the rock twice. He then dies. Opposition to Gay Marriage vs. Homophobia Most gay rights advocates voice opinions of their own. Conservatives are motivated by homophobia [or hate], they say. They see it as akin to the government changing a basic tenet of their religion, not unlike forcing Orthodox Jews to eat pork or forcing Catholics to use something other than water in their baptisms. State vs. Federal While there are many conservatives who believe the institution of marriage should be defended as a covenant between a man and a woman, many more believe that the federal government shouldnt be dealing with the subject at all. Its a matter of jurisdiction. A large majority of conservatives believe the gay marriage issue is a states rights issue since there is no explicit language regarding the subject in the Constitution. The Bottom Line For most mainstream conservatives, gay marriage isnt the issue it is for social conservatives. While there is a crossover for many on the right, political conservatism is less about wedge issues and more about limiting the size and scope of government, building a strong national defense and enabling the freedom of enterprise. Standardized testing is designed for a system of equality for which the school system is not. The theories of three theorists namely, Sigmund Freud (1856 - 1939), Carl Gustav Jung (1875 - 1961), Albert Bandura (1925- ), and their work on human personality shall be discussed here. In the process I shall envisage to understand the differences and similarities in the theories of psychoanalysis. In my perspective human personality is complex, and is constituted of many factors such as 1) physical attributes and genetic make-up, 2) cultural and ethnical background, 3) personal aptitudes and beliefs. The first two factors are largely inherited with little scope for alteration; like for example, skin color, height, propensity towards some inherited diseases, are inherited and do have a bearing on one's personality. The second two factors are socially constructed, partially inherited and partially changeable, but, nevertheless have great influence on the human personality. For example, the work-culture and perception of opportunities by a Chinese is more likely to be typically inherited from his/her parents and very specific to that ethnic and cultural background. I call it partially changeable because, the same Chinese immigrated to the U.S. ... The third set of factor is important and is mostly responsible for making a qualitative difference in one's personality. For example, physicist Stephen Hawking suffered from the degenerative Lou Gherig's Disease (www.hawking.org), but never allowed it to come in the way of his scientific quest. In many other novels of this sort, the dialog comes across as an extended complaint, a long and tiresome negative report of how down-trodden and hopeless is a given situation, and how arrogantly nonchalant are those who benefit from or cause it. The beauty of this book is Cisneros' deft mingling of Mango Street's poverty and low social status with its inherently human beauty and magic when seen through the eyes of a young girl. Mango Street's humanly rich qualities are what will bring Esperanza back. The mayor won't help Mango Street, so who will? Clearly, at the end of the book, she will. Her telling of their story in such a positive and invigorating light might change the mayor's mind. Reading Cisneros' brief biography on the last pag e says that she taught high school drop-outs, probably not from towns like Amherst or Acton, but from neighborhoods like Mango Street. Seldom can an author make a pointed social and political statement about poverty and social stratification without making it oppressive and depressing. Esperanza realizes her situation enough to want to escape it. She sympathizes with her father who wakes up in the dark every morning and is gone before the rest of the house is awake. But she is at the same time wonderfully innocent. She and her friends believe that the Earl of Tennessee's prostitutes are his wife, and no one can agree on what she looks like. This book is like a photo album, there is no chronological story, but each snap-shot a whole story in itself. (Twain 24) Pap’s character generates an excellent example of burlesque through caricature. Huck describes his father as one would visualize him. From the description provided to the readers, Pap Finn is seen as an older man, very unkempt, pale as a ghost, and very hairy with a frightening appearance. Just like sports players were in competition for the best player, our squad was in competition for who could be the skinniest and prettiest. If you were the skinniest and prettiest you were more likely to be popular. A lot of girls, including myself, on the squad were either anorexic or bulimic. Both disorders are equally bad but very different. I started to become anorexic at the very beginning of the season. Our coach was very supportive of all of her cheerleaders, and worked our butts off to try and get us in the best shape we could be in. For me, exercise was not enough. I started to get into drugs to lose weight. I started on the diet pills, which cut my appetite in half. The diet pills and the exercise combined were still not working fast enough for me, so I began to experiment with cocaine. I knew what I was doing was wrong, but I didn’t care, because I was losing weight faster than I had ever before. At the beginning of the season I weighed 130 pounds and within two months I was down to 100 pounds. At this point from the drugs I had lost any appetite I had and I was only eating two crackers a day. A twenty-ounce bottle of water would fill my stomach and sometimes push my belly out. I was so dissatisfied with myself when I would look in the mirror. My thighs were always too big or my tummy wasn’t flat en ough. I was never going to achieve Cindy Crawford’s body and still never will. I was the perfect stereotype, for an anorexic woman. I was very driven in every thing I did. I felt I needed to have control over everything and everyone around me. I felt I was slipping and letting the drugs control me, and my eating was something I could control. My self-esteem got very low and I started to become depressed. I got so bad I was to the point to where my period would start to skip a couple of months and then come back every once in a while. My boyfriend was the first to confront me about my problem. I didn’t want anyone’s help, because I felt I didn’t have a problem. One day at work I passed out in the middle of taking someone’s order and an ambulance rushed me to the hospital. The doctors could tell my body was so undernourished that they told my parents I was twenty pounds under weight and I needed to see a specialist or be checked in to a clinic. I freaked my self out when I woke up in a hospital bed and eventually with the help of my friends and family I began to gradually start eating and getting nutrients in my body. I quit cheerleading because of all the pressure to stay thin. Bulimia is another eating disorder that is very serious in our society. People who have problems with bulimia have different characteristics than people dealing with anorexia. People who are very outgoing and promiscuous are more likely to be bulimic. Bulimia is when a person has frequent episodes of binge eating and pukes after meals. Bulimia is very dangerous because it destroys your stomach lining, gives you very bad breath, and could give you ulcers in your esophagus. This disorder is a little harder to detect because the person can usually maintain a normal, steady body weight. Women who are bulimic often take laxatives to lose a couple of pounds quick. Weight and appearance isn’t only a problem in the female gender. Eating disorders seem to be getting more common in men as time goes on. The media shows men in a whole different light. The exact opposite is expected from men than what is expected from women. Men are supposed to look strong and muscular, the bigger the better. I don’t personally like a very muscular man; I would rather have someone I could cuddle with, not someone who feels like a rock. In Conclusion, Eating disorders are becoming more common everyday. In my opinion I think that beautiful is not one shape or size it is the way you present yourself. Aware that Cradocks force was badly outgunned, the Admiralty dispatched the elderly battleship HMS Canopus and the armored cruiser HMS Defence. From his base in the Falklands, Cradock sent Glasgow ahead into the Pacific to scout for von Spee. By late October, Cradock decided that he could not wait any longer for Canopus and Defence to arrive and sailed for the Pacific unreinforced. Rendezvousing with Glasgow off Coronel, Chile, Cradock prepared to search for von Spee.
